How can we help?
Answers to the questions parents ask most. Can't find yours? Email hello@famowl.app — a real human (Simon, who built FamOwl) reads everything, usually within a day.
Getting started
How do I set up my family?
Create your parent account (parents must be 18+), then create your household. Add each kid as a profile — just a name and an avatar, no email or password. Then create your first missions and stock up a few rewards. Most families are running in about five minutes.
How does my partner / co-parent join?
From your household settings, generate an invite code. Your co-parent downloads FamOwl, creates their own parent account, and enters the code to join your household. You'll both see the same missions, approvals, and rewards.
How do I set up FamOwl on my kid's own device?
Install FamOwl on the kid's device, then from your parent app open kid pairing and scan the QR code (or type the short code shown). The device links to your household in kid mode — no email, no password, and no way for the kid to wander into parent settings or billing. You can unpair from either device at any time.
We share one device. Can kids still use it?
Yes — that's the default. Hand your phone or the family iPad over and switch to a kid's profile. They see their missions and points; parent controls stay behind your account.
Missions, points & rewards
How do missions work?
A mission is a chore or task assigned to a kid, worth points you choose. Missions can be one-off ("clean out the rabbit hutch") or repeating ("make your bed, every morning"). When a kid marks one done, it lands in your approvals — points are awarded when you approve.
What's photo proof?
Kids can attach a photo when completing a mission — the made bed, the empty dishwasher. You see it in the approval. Proof photos stay inside your family: they're never shared outside your household and never sent to the AI assistant.
What should rewards cost?
Whatever works for your family — you set every reward and its price in points. A common starting pattern: small daily-ish rewards (30–60 min screen time) cheap enough to reach in a few days, medium rewards (movie night, a small toy) about a week's effort, and one big saver goal so kids learn to hold out. Our blog has worked examples.
Can points convert to pocket money?
Yes — create a cash-out reward (for example, "$10 pocket money") and set its point price. FamOwl tracks the redemption; you hand over the cash or do the bank transfer. FamOwl never touches real money, cards, or bank accounts.
Can I undo a mistake (wrong points, accidental approval)?
You can adjust missions and rewards at any time, and edit a kid's point balance from their profile if something went sideways. If you're stuck, email hello@famowl.app.
Premium & billing
What's free and what's Premium?
Free, forever: unlimited missions, rewards, photo-proof approvals, the family calendar, up to 3 kids, stock badges, and 3 AI assistant messages a month.
Premium adds: unlimited kids, the wishlist, long-term projects, daily challenges, custom badge design, and 500 AI messages a month. NZ$4.99/month or NZ$50/year — the App Store shows the equivalent in your local currency.
How does the free trial work?
The annual plan includes a 30-day free trial. You won't be charged until the trial ends, and you can cancel any time before then in your Apple subscription settings. Apple sends a reminder before a trial converts.
How do I cancel or manage my subscription?
Subscriptions are handled by Apple: on your iPhone go to Settings → your name → Subscriptions → FamOwl. Cancelling stops the next renewal — you keep Premium until the end of the period you've paid for.
I subscribed but Premium isn't showing. / I got a new phone.
Open the Premium screen in FamOwl and tap Restore purchases, signed in with the same Apple ID you bought with. Premium applies to your whole household, so a co-parent doesn't need to buy it again. Still stuck? Email hello@famowl.app.
How do refunds work?
Apple processes all App Store payments and refunds. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. Apple decides the outcome — we can't override it, but if something went wrong on our side, email us and we'll do right by you.
Privacy, safety & your data
What data does FamOwl collect about my kids?
As little as the app can function with. Kids have no accounts, no email, no password. Analytics are opt-in for parents and always disabled for kid profiles, regardless of your settings. Proof photos stay in your household. The full detail is in our Privacy Policy.
What does the AI assistant see?
When you ask the assistant something, it gets a trimmed summary of your household — recent missions and activity — with photos stripped out entirely. Kids' names are replaced with initials unless you've explicitly opted in to sharing them (Settings → AI & privacy). We never train AI on your personal data, and we route only to AI providers configured for zero data retention and no training. (We may use aggregated, de-identified patterns to improve our own systems — never your personal data.) The full detail is in our Privacy Policy.
How do I delete my account and data?
In the app: Settings → Account → Delete account. This permanently removes your household's data. You can also email privacy@famowl.app from your account email and we'll handle it. Either way, deletion is permanent — there's no recycle bin.
Who's behind FamOwl?
FamOwl is built and run by Simon Singh, a dad and solo developer in New Zealand. No ad-tech company, no data brokers, no investors pushing for "engagement". Just optional Premium subscriptions keeping the lights on.
Troubleshooting
Missions or points aren't syncing between devices.
FamOwl syncs in realtime when online. Check both devices have a connection, then force-quit and reopen the app. If a kid's device still looks stale, unpair and re-pair it with a fresh code. Persisting? Email us with what you're seeing.
Notifications aren't arriving.
Check iOS Settings → Notifications → FamOwl is allowed, and that Focus modes aren't filtering it. Notification settings inside FamOwl control which events ping you (e.g. new approvals).
Something crashed or looks broken.
First, check the App Store for an update — fixes ship frequently. If it persists, email hello@famowl.app with your device model, iOS version, and what you were doing. Screenshots help enormously.
